As we all already know, Toa Payoh is one gem of a town when it comes to unparalleled and affordable dining options. The thing is, they’re scattered all over the lorongs and might take some finding if you’re not already a TPY resident.
Imagine our glee when we chanced upon a terribly authentic (so good it’s like taking a trip down to Penang) Penang restaurant in the middle of Toa Payoh, just steps away from HDB Hub! Situated in Toa Payoh Central’s Food Alley, the restaurant, simply named Traditional Penang Food, really brings this writer back to his childhood when he visited Penang with his family and indulged in their renowned Penang-style laksa.
The Penang style laksa here is sour (as Penang laksa is supposed to be), and as a result, much more appetising than the local Singapore laksa we’re so accustomed to. Your tastebuds will be jolted awake by the piquant broth, which is complemented perfectly by the silky smooth noodles.
Compared to the laksa, the prawn mee is more similar to the local iteration Singaporeans are more familiar with. While there was nothing particularly fancy with the ingredients, the dollop of chilli paste on top was the icing on the cake for me.
As a result of the wok hei wafting relentlessly from the kitchen, I could tell the char kway teow was going to be served soon! When it finally did appear on my table after tempting my olfactory senses for a good five minutes, I was not disappointed at all. The prawns were fresh, the lup cheong were sliced thinly and nicely, and the whole dish was very flavourful and well put together.
The next time you’re at HDB Hub running some errands or just going about your daily routines, pop by Traditional Penang Food for a comforting and reassuring taste of Penang, right here in the heart of Singapore.
