OK is EZi! – Our First Minimart in TPY

There are few places as authentically Singaporean heartland-ish than Toa Payoh Central. HDB blocks lined up neatly one row after another, a library, Courts if you need any electrical appliances, the stadium and swimming complex less than ten minutes away… I could go on and on about how wonderful TPY is. No really. There’s pretty much everything you need here. Barbers and beauty parlours? Checked. The latest magazines? Popular bookstore. Groceries running low? NTUC.

What about food, you ask? As a self-proclaimed foodie, I’ve had many a conversations surrounding the topic of FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD with taxi uncles (and in recent times, Uber and Grab drivers). Whenever we get to talking about where some of the best food in Singapore can be found, Toa Payoh almost always comes up. TPY food is not just good, mind you. It’s good, and cheap, which is like the holy grail of economically savvy foodies like yours truly.

Late last year, a mama shop of sorts popped up at Block 184 Toa Payoh Central. There’s something endearing about a mini mart — with its bijou store occupying the first storey of a quaint old HDB block — that strives to bring in something not commonly found. At first glance, OK Mini Mart can pass off as any of the dime a doze mama shops. Upon closer inspection though, you’ll find something a little out of the ordinary.

Like this series of Cantata Coffee from Korea.

And these snacks from Japan and Korea. I picked out the Orange Honey and Peach gummies from the Disney Pastilles series, and it was pretty close to love at first bite. Best consumed cold.

If you’re feeling a little under the weather, opt for some freshly brewed Herbal Tea.

The ice-cream collection is also more than just your usual run-of-the-mill Cornetto or Wall’s. Ice cream bungeo-ppang (korean for carp bread) anybody?

With a strong focus on imported snacks and treats from Japan and Korea, OK Mart is attracting a steady stream of loyal customers. The next time you’re craving for some Korean ice creams or Japanese snacks, there’s no longer a need to hunt down the nearest SHINE Korea or J-Mart. Your friendly neighbourhood mama shop has got you covered.

OK lah!
