EZi is a Piece of Cake: Simply Sinless

“Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?” – William Shakespeare

“You think just becos you very guai means cannot eat cake or drink alcohol meh?”, the Singaporean in me muses, as I tried to make sense of this line many years ago.

Fast forward many years later, I find myself pondering over The Bard’s wise words. I was told recently, by some of my friends, that deciding to eat cake (or not) can sometimes feel like a constant battle with yourself. “It looks so tasty! But I can’t… Oh my god that’s so sinful! I need to run 10km to burn that off leh… But I want sia…” Look no further guys, Simply Sinless is here to solve all your can-I-have-my-cake-and-eat-it-too conundrums.

In 2014, with the simple intent to bake cupcakes for her family and friends, owner Aisya started Simply Sinless. Armed with a genuine passion for baking, the business soon took off and she found herself moving on to conducting baking workshops on top of the usual cake business.

To Aisya, baking is more than just putting the ingredients together and putting them into the oven. “It’s therapeutic, it’s about having fun, and it’s about being more confident with yourself.”

Without further ado, let’s dive right into some of the most popular cakes at Simply Sinless.

1. Tiramisu, Lavender Mango, Rose Lychee Pistachio (L-R)

The Tiramisu, made entirely without alcohol, shines with a piquant coffee flavour. The Lavender Mango in the middle is slightly sour, but overall a pleasant afternoon treat with the gentle fragrance of the lavender (p.s. if you’re a mango lover, check out the Mango Tango here). My personal favourite would have to be the Rose Lychee Pistachio, a subtle rose-based cake sprinkled with tiny bits of lychee and pistachio for a very satisfying bite in every mouth.

2. Sea Salt Caramel Crumble Tub Cake

Ever worried about how your cakes might get smashed on the way back from the bakery? Worry no more because at Simply Sinless, you can opt for these wonderful Tub Cakes. There were three flavours when I visited: the Ondeh Ondeh, the Red Velvet Nutella, and my favourite the Sea Salt Caramel Crumble. It’s light, and fluffy, and the caramel crumble on top reminds me of one of my favourite go-to pasar malam food—muah chee. See already also happy. ?

3. Ondeh Ondeh

Saving the best for last, here’s the undisputed smash hit over at Simply Sinless—the Ondeh Ondeh. It’s light and soft, and just look at how generous the portion of pandan gula melaka is. It was a little too sweet for my liking though, but nothing that can’t be solved with a warm cup of kopi o.

Before I left, Aisya shared that we can look forward to new durian flavours in June this year. Ah, the good old king of fruits. ? #DurianLovers
